QGIS 1: Building a QGIS project - the road to data visualisation

Site investigations involve considerable cost in both time and money. The British Standard 'Investigation of potentially contaminated sites' (BS10175:2011+A2:2017) states that "In all cases, data should be presented in a clear and easily assimilated way as possible ...".  But for many consultants this can seem a difficult and complex task that requires specialist software and skills. However, being able to clearly present your SI data can help prevent costly delays and mistakes and facilitate regulatory sign-off.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are powerful tools that can help visualise contaminant data and investigate relationships with other spatial information, such as buildings and features shown on historic mapping. Where remediation is potentially required, if GIS analysis can show that the contamination is localised, and particularly when a credible source can be identified, then more sustainable, cost effective and targeted solutions can often be designed, which are acceptable to regulators.

Using QGIS 3+, a free and open source GIS, this one day hands-on introductory course for beginners or new users provides a series of practical exercises with detailed instructions to utilise some of the most useful tools and functions of direct relevance to your contaminated land work. This course will quickly provide you with the ability to plot out and interrogate your chemical data and combine it with other geographic information to help you understand the sources and risks at a site. This approach helps you to identify and justify more cost effective solutions - getting better value from the data for you and your clients.

The course will involve hands-on experience with the QGIS 3+ software with main activities including:
  • basic principles of GIS relevant to contaminated land;
  • installing QGIS & Plugins;
  • explore Toolbars & Panels;
  • explore Coordinate Reference Systems;
  • explore measuring and identify tools;
  • explore panning & zooming around maps;
  • create a QGIS project;
  • loading shapefiles, rasters and SI (csv) datasets;
  • creating and editing vector layers (polygon and point data); 
  • accessing open source datasets (e.g. WMS, GeojSON, KML);
  • georeferencing raster data and historical background maps;
  • displaying your SI data in QGIS;
  • begin to query your SI data in QGIS;
  • viewing your site investigation photos and logs directly within your QGIS project;
  • using simple Vector geoprocessing tools (Clip, Buffer, Difference);
  • extract simple maps for use in your reports.

Delegates will need to bring their own laptops (large display screens recommended) with the QGIS 3+ software installed and ready to use (if this is a problem, please give us a call on 0115 7484080). Full joining instructions including details of which QGIS install version we will be using will be sent to each delegate prior to the course.

By the end of the course you should be better able to:
  • understand how GIS (QGIS) can help you in your work;
  • produce spatial plots showing contaminant distributions;
  • understand the risks to relevant receptors at your sites;
  • make use of open and other data sources to develop and personalise your own queriable Whats In Your Back Yard (WIYBY) database;
  • extract outputs for use in your reports;
  • inform your clients and regulator about the results of your site investigations.
All delegates will be issued with a Certificate of Attendance – which should be retained and used to provide evidence of CPD activity when required by employers or professional bodies.

This is an introductory course suited for those without any GIS contaminated land background or those who have used GIS to view data but not actively create a GIS project from scratch.
