Using KeyCSM to create Conceptual Site Models

A conceptual site model (CSM) summarises the ‘state-of-the-art' understanding of sources, pathways, and receptors at potentially contaminated sites. Despite the paramount importance of the CSM for planning further site investigations and for informing risk assessment decisions, many people find creating and reviewing CSMs a challenging exercise. KeyCSM is designed to facilitate easy input of relevant information so that the environmental consultant can focus on identifying the pollutant linkages and designing the model for maximum utility and clarity. Land Quality Management Ltd (LQM) worked with Keynetix Ltd to develop the KeyCSM software to store, manipulate, and present site-related information for the purpose of creating clear and informative CSMs. Amongst its many capabilities, KeyCSM can be used to create detailed plans, cross sections, network diagrams and matrix diagrams to represent the sources, pathways and receptors associated with a potentially contaminated site. Using KeyCSM provides a consistent method for storing and presenting site-related information in the form of a CSM which can be easily interpreted and updated.

The course will cover:
  • Hands on guided tutorial in use of KeyCSM.
  • Creating site plans and cross sections
  • Importing background maps and data
  • Defining and assigning sources, pathways and receptors
  • Use of layers to display and analyse complex information
  • Generating network diagrams and matrices
  • Advanced features and customisation
  • Discussion and illustration on improving CSMs
The event assumes understanding of what conceptual models are and how they are used in the contaminated land industry.
By the end of the course you should be better able to:
  • Use all the main features of KeyCSM
  • Create and design CSMs
All delegates will be issued with a Certificate of Attendance – which should be retained and used to provide evidence of CPD activity when required by employers or professional bodies.
The courses will be of relevance to:
  • Regulatory and local authority staff involved with contaminated land issues
  • Consultants
At present, KeyCSM is aimed at those creating CSMs but it may also be useful to those reviewing CSMs.

Human-health risk assessment (Day 3)

This course builds on the fundamental principles of risk assessment introduced in Day 1- Introduction and Development of Conceptual Models. The focus will be on the principles of human health risk assessment & generic quantitative risk assessment. It will cover issues such as the use of Soil Guideline Values (SGVs) and what to do when there is no SGV available
