Sustainable Regeneration and Remediation

Remediation activities have the potential to result in both positive benefits and negative impacts.

Benefits may include:

  • facilitating the rehabilitation of derelict and contaminated site with the potential to stimulate employment and wider regeneration;
  • protection of groundwater resources;
  • removing (or at least managing) potential financial, legal and reputational liabilities associated with the contamination.

Possible impacts may include:

  • generating waste soils that are sent to landfill;
  • releasing carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases during the excavation, haulage or treatment of soils or groundwater;
  • causing nuisance and disruption to neighbours, residents or other stakeholders;
  • significant costs.

A sustainability appraisal seeks to evaluate these impacts and benefits in line fundamental components of sustainable development: social, economic and environmental. LQM are able to provide rapid and transparent sustainability appraisals of proposed remediation schemes or to advise on ways of remediating soil or groundwater in less environmentally intrusive ways.
