Asbestos in Soil and Made Ground
Due to its widespread historical use, asbestos is now commonly encountered in soils and made ground particularly at brownfield sites - for example, it is listed in all 47 of the Department of the Environment Industry Profiles as a potential contaminant of concern. However, there is currently no guidance from government of how any potential risks posed by this unique contaminant should be investigated, assessed and managed in the UK.
Over many years, LQM have developed considerable experiece of the problems that can result from the detection of Asbestos Containing Soils (ACS) at a contaminated land site, and developed innovative solutions and approaches to them based international experience and a deep understanding of the underlying science and principals. Because of this industry-leading knowledge, LQM were appointed as lead-authors of the recently published CIRIA guidance "Asbestos in soil and made ground: a guide to understanding and managing risks (C733)". Since its publication this guidance has both increased the focus on Asbestos Containing Soils (ACS) within the contaminated land industry and brought the complexities of ACS to the attension of the asbestos industry. There are now several industry-led initiatives under way to help to address some of these issues and to inform and derive a coherent and practical UK policy on the investigation, assessment and management of ACS.
