The LQM/CIEH Generic Assessment Criteria
for Human Health Risk Assessment

2nd Edition

The
LQM/CIEH Generic Assessment Criteria<br>
for Human Health Risk AssessmentThe 2nd edition of the LQM/CIEH GAC publication was launched on the 13th July 2009 in Nottingham. The publication has been updated to reflect the significant changes in human health risk assessment technical guidance and policy since the release of the first edition. The 2nd edition builds on the work of the 82 contaminated land practitioners from the public and private sectors who, under the guidance of LQM, undertook the initial research on the toxicological and physical-chemical input parameters for 76 substances. At the workshop facilitated by LQM and CIEH in Nottingham in January 2009 these delegates derived a series of GAC for use in generic quantitative risk assessment.

The 2nd edition includes Generic Assessment Criteria for an extended range of 81 substances including:

For each substance, GAC have been derived for a range of generic land uses and Soil Organic Matter contents and all toxicological and physical-chemical data inputs used in the derivation of the GAC are presented and discussed in the publication

Frequently Asked Questions (2nd edition) and Errata

Since its publication, we have received a number of questions and comments from consultants and regulators relating to the 2nd Edition. Many of these have been valid technical queries. In order to make LQM's answers or position on these issues available to a wider audience we have prepared a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document for the 2nd Edition, which we endeavour to update as new queries are submitted. The latest version is available for download below:

1st Edition

Generic Assessment Criteria for Human Health Risk Assessment (1st Edition) In 2006 the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) and Land Quality Management Ltd (LQM) published the 1st edition entitled "Generic Assessment Criteria for Human Health Risk Assessment". The publication was based on the output form a two-day workshop at the University of Nottingham. The 1st Edition contained a set of transparent, scientifically based and policy compliant generic assessment criteria that soon became widely adopted by regulators and practitioners as authoritative values for use in GQRA. These became known as the LQM CIEH GAC

The 1st edition included Generic Assessment Criteria for 34 substances, including beryllium, copper, vanadium, zinc, total petroleum hydrocarbon fractions (aromatic and aliphatic), four polyaromatic hydrocarbons and nine chlorinated solvents. All GAC were derived using the then current CLEA UK (beta) model.

However, with the publication of revised guidance and an updated version of CLEA by the Environment Agency in 2008, the GAC derived in the 1st edition no longer comply with UK policy. Consequently, the 1st Edition is no longer available for purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions (1st Edition)

As with the 2nd Edition, a number of technical queries were received relating to the 1st Edition and these where used as the basis for an FAQ document. The final version of which is available below:
